Lap Band and Pregnancy: How to Cope

2009 September 24

Lap Band doctors report that many, many women in their 20s and 30s ask what should they do if they go ahead with a Lap Band and then get pregnant.

One such woman, 24-year-old Stephanie wrote on a Lap Band forum that she was three months pregnant and was still eating mostly protein to help in her weight loss.

But, due to being with child, she was hurling every morning.

Women in such circumstances must to admit to being on the horns of a delimia. On the one hand, they have ponied up some serious money to lose massive amounts of weight.

On the other hand, almost all women gain some weight during pregnancy. How to cope?

A bariatric center in New Jersey tells its women patients it’s safe to get pregnant six months after surgery. But it’s better to wait at least a year.

Because any Lap Band patient is consuming less food, nutritional supplements are a must.

However, six months is not quite enough time to see the disappearance of those dreaded co morbidities like:

  • Hypertension
  • Type II diabetes
  • Sleep apnea

Some physicians recommend that new-moms-to-be go through their complete pregnancies with the Lap Band restriction ring unfilled. The idea is to prevent any nutritional short comings for baby.

Other recommendations often include avoiding:

  • Alcohol
  • Fish
  • Junk food
  • Over the counter drugs

As far as prescription drugs are concerned, be sure and check with your Lap Band doctor.

To make sure the pregnancy goes smoothly also consider:

  • Appropriate appointments with your Lap Band surgeon and Ob/gyn
  • Taking twenty minutes to eat small meals throughout the day
  • Following a low-carb, high-protein, low fat diet.
